What You Should Know About Aquaponics Fish

Starting your own Aquaponics system at home would involve that you have to take into consideration not only the space where you want to set your system up, the materials you need, your budget, but also choosing the right Aquaponics fish to raise.

Fish, as we all know, has a long list of benefits to the human body. Other than it is one of the best sources of protein with fewer calories compared to other meat sources, eating fish has proven to cut down the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 36%. This is according to a report from CNN Health.  Eating fish also alleviates other health conditions like high blood pressure, inflammations, prostate cancer, and depression.

The problem lies on the fish supply we are getting these days. Due to environmental problems faced and the non-ending pollutants present, the fishes hauled are not totally toxic-free. This is the reason why more and more people who are health conscious see the importance of setting up an Aquaponics system that can ensure that the fish they are eating is healthy and clean.

Because the Aquaponics fish in your system is very important due to the fact that they supply the nutrients needed for your plant beds to grow, it is important that you consider this guideline in deciding the species of fish you want for your system.

1.  Different types of fish have different requirements to survive and grow. The requirements would mainly focus on the water temperature of your fish tank. There are fishes that thrive in warm temperature like Tilapia while Trout grows well in a cool temperature.  Certainly, you can mix different fishes with different requirements in one tank. You have to decide the water temperature you want to maintain.

2.  You also have to decide how many fish you want to put in your tank. This will depend on your filtration system installed.  Some commercial experts in Aquaponics would advise that you based this on the ratio of a half pound fish is to one gallon of water in the tank. You should also consider the maturation, size, and weight of the fish. The amount of food you add to your tank each day should also be considered.  All this information will benefit your grow beds.

Remember, they get their nutrients from the fish and if there is an insufficient fish waste given to your vegetation, it will certainly affect the growth of your plants.

3.  Another thing to consider would be the restrictions put up by your local government when it comes to the type of fish you can put in your tank. Before you make any decision, it is best to check with your local pet shop or the local Department of Agriculture on what Aquaponics fish species you can grow.

4.  Decide whether you want to grow fingerlings or fry. Fingerlings are fish as the size of your fingers while the fry are fish that have just hatched. You can’t mix both as the fry can be eaten. Some people prefer fingerlings because fry takes awhile to grow.

It is important that you consider all these before you decide on the Aquaponics fish you want to add to your tank. Remember, the growth of your plant bed depends solely on your fish tank. To have a successful system, balance of both components is vital.
